Prelude to a Cure Receives Proclamation from Tampa Mayor, Jane Castor Declaring November “National Lung Cancer Awareness Month”

TAMPA, Fla.Nov. 5, 2020Prelude to a Cure, a non-profit organization based in Tampa, Florida received an official proclamation from the City of Tampa’s Mayor Jane Castor, designating November as National Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Prelude to a Cure is committed to pursuing and supporting innovative lung cancer research focused on prevention, early screenings, improved treatment options and higher survival rates.

Lung cancer has been considered the “invisible cancer” due to the late onset of symptoms when the cancer is in advanced stages, low survival rate and lack of knowledge by the public. Currently it is the least federally funded of the top cancers, yet is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.

“We’re pleased that Mayor Castor and the City of Tampa have brought Lung Cancer Awareness to the forefront by issuing this proclamation. At Prelude to a Cure, we’re committed to funding vital seed grants that can help accelerate the pace of research toward effective treatments and ultimately a cure for a disease that is estimated to have over 228,000 new cases in 2020, with 18,150 of them being Floridians,” said Dr. Lary Robinson, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Moffitt Cancer Center and founder of Prelude to a Cure. “The way to the cure is working with people who are collaborative and brave enough to search in unexpected places.”

Co-founder Dr. Scott Antonia, former Medical Oncologist and Co-Leader of the Immunology Program and Chairman of the Thoracic Oncology Department at Moffitt Cancer Center added, “Lung Cancer is not a smoker’s disease or old person disease; if you have lungs, you can develop lung cancer. If we end the stigma, we can find the cure.”

While the month of November brings awareness to Lung Cancer, Prelude to a Cure will continue its mission to educate, spread awareness and raise funds for valuable research to work toward the ultimate goal – a cure.

About Prelude to a Cure:
Founded in 2012 by Moffitt Cancer Center’s Dr. Lary Robinson, and nationally renowned thoracic researcher, Dr. Scott Antonia, Prelude to a Cure was created to become the driving force in funding lung cancer research. They believe that breakthroughs will come from this new generation of researchers.
